Dan Carter

DIRECTOR, WRITER, FIGHT DIRECTOR, ACTOR, and COACH, Dan studied at San Francisco’s American Conservatory Theatre, apprenticed with Houston’s Alley Theatre, and made his professional debut in Theatre Company of Boston’s Richard III starring Al Pacino. He has appeared onstage throughout the country (including a year-long season in rotating rep w/ Asolo Theatre) and in films, TV, and streaming platforms. His writing includes Weather or Not, A Stand-Up Guy, Coleridge Interrupted, Pack Your Own Trunk. Auditioning For Eternity (w/ Coni Koepfinger), and an adaptation of Edward Marsten’s The Merry Devils. He is co-author with Brant Pope of the book Using Open Scenes to Act Successfully on Stage and Screen. He was stage manager of the New York revival of Dames at Sea. He was certified as a Fight Director and as a Teacher by of the Society of American Fight Directors and is a recipient of their Patrick Crean Award. He was Director of the Penn State School of Theatre for 22 years, prior to which he was Associate Dean for Production at Florida State University and Chair of Theatre and Dance at Illinois State University. He was Artistic Director of Pennsylvania Centre Stage and Producing Director of Illinois Shakespeare Festival. He served as Dean of the College of Fellows of the American Theatre and as President of both the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST) and the National Theatre Conference. He batted second for the Over-40 Baseball National Champion Tallahassee Classics.
